Ken Ofori-Atta has admitted that 2022 was his toughest year yet as Minister of Finance.

He said the move to go to the International Monetary Fund (IMF), for instance, was one of the low moments for him.

Mr Ofori-Atta made this known on Monday, July 31 when he presented the 2023 mid-year budget review in Parliament.

He was happy, however, to announce that that on the back of the despondence in 2022, he has turned the economy around.

“Mr Speaker, we had turned the corner and, more importantly, we are determined to continue down that path,” he assured in his presentation.

He also spoke about how “we have managed to keep the lights in spite of the challenges to enable business and households to function”.

Mr Ofori-Atta has been the Finance Minister since 2017, when President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo became President.

In 2022, some New Patriotic Party (NPP) Members of Parliament (MPs) petitioned President Akufo-Addo to sack him.

Led by Asante Akim North MP Andy Kwame Appiah-Kubi, the MPs said the dismissal of Mr Ofori-Atta and his then Minister of State at the Finance Minister Charles Adu Boahen would restore confidence in the economy.

But the President asked for time for Mr Ofori-Atta to complete negotiating the IMF programme.

Mr Adu-Boahen was relieved of his position a month after the MPs’ request after an exposé by ace investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas.
