A future National Democratic Congress (NDC) government would set up a Governance Advisory Council to oversee and score government’s performance in the areas of human rights protection, corruption, freedom of speech and upholding civil liberties.
That is according to NDC 2024 flagbearer hopeful John Mahama, who has been responding to content of the 2022 US department of state report which found gross rights violations, arbitrary arrests and torture remain high in Ghana.
Speaking during his tour of Kpone Katamanso in the Greater Accra Region, he said “Recently, the US Human Right report has come out and it makes very bad reading.
“Human right abuses, corruption, torture, so many things. And that is why I said when we come into office we will pursue constitutional review so that we tighten the constitution to ensure that it guarantees our freedoms and rights and make things better.
“We will set up a Governance Advisory Council and that would include Civil Society Organisations, religious leaders, chiefs and ordinary grassroots people.”
