The Secretary-General of the Ghana Trades Union Congress (GTUC) has chastised the President for continuing non-essential projects when the country is facing enormous economic difficulties.

Dr Anthony Yaw Baah also recommended, among other things, that the size of government can be reduced to save cost.

He insisted that the situation the country finds itself can be changed by Ghanaians themselves.

“We believe strongly that government can lead us out of this crisis, and the government can do so by cutting expenditure on non-essentials including the need to stop spending our hard-earned revenue on a National Cathedral,” Dr Yaw Baah stated on Monday, May 1 while delivering a speech on behalf of workers at the May Day Celebrations in Bolgatanga in the Upper East Region.

“The president has always said he wants to create another Notre Dame in Ghana so we can attract a lot of visitors but we disagree,” he lashed out.

“In fact, comrades, it will be better to convert the project into a national hospital.”

He added that the country has too many ministers of state, which is taking a toll on the public purse.

On his part, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo assured the workers that government is working hard to steer the country out of the economic turmoil.

He said plans are far advanced to ensure that the economy bounces back.

President Akufo-Addo tasked workers, whom he said were fully paid during the crises, to meet their part of the bargain by working urgently to conclude discussions towards addressing the economic challenges.

He was hopeful an IMF programme will soon be secured to give a boost to the economy.
