Award-winning Thespian and Broadcaster Naa Ashorkor Mensah-Doku has shared that stepping onto the stage is a transformative experience for any actor, especially because it is a realm where performances are delivered live, without the luxury of retakes or edits.
Naa Ashorkor who appeared as a guest on The Day Show with Berla Mundi said her transition from film to stage play has been a revelation, offering her the chance to learn how to do it right the first time.
“You know they say that stage is a great place to learn for all actors because on stage you are live and you know how it is when it is live, you don’t have the opportunity to redo it. Stage affords you the opportunity to learn how to do it right for the first time,” she disclosed.
The Ghanaian actress acknowledged that while she entered the stage a bit later in her career, having started in film, the experience has made her a better actor overall, even in front of the camera for television.
“So even though I got into stage a little late, I started from film, I have found that being on stage has made me a much better actor even in front of the camera on television,” Naa Ashorkor shared. “I think it has been a great transition or attempt at stage and it’s going pretty well so far and I’ve got a wonderful team to learn from and to work with”
Naa Ashorkor’s journey into stage plays has been an enriching one. Collaborating with George Quaye’s Image Bureau and her own April Communications, she recently staged the play “An Inspector Calls!” in honor of the late Ekow Blankson, a talented actor who passed away last year.
The play, originally written by J. B. Priestley, is a modern morality tale that delves into the roles of a wealthy family in the suicide of a young woman.
In “An Inspector Calls!,” Naa Ashorkor portrays one of the family members who is questioned by the inspector about their involvement in the tragedy.
Through skilled storytelling, the play explores themes of responsibility, guilt, and the consequences of our actions.
With a cast including renowned actors such as Fred Amugi, Akofa Edjeani, Fiifi Coleman, and many more, the performance captivated the audience with a perfect blend of drama and comedy.
The stage play experience has not only enhanced Naa Ashorkor’s acting skills but also provided her with a valuable learning environment.
