Member of Parliament for Ningo Prampram Constituency Sam Nartey George has lauded the Inspector General of Police, Dr George Akuffo Dampare, for the deployment to Assin North before and during Tuesday’s by-elections.
He said the police stood their grounds and ensured that security was maintained, especially at the polling stations where “enough” officers deterred miscreants.
“The same way the security services stood their grounds in Assin North,” he submitted on The Keypoints on TV3/3FM on Saturday, July 1.
“Let me salute the security services. I met IGP Dampare and he is someone I am his biggest critics and so when I met him in Assin North at Gangan A and B Polling Station, I said to him ‘IGP, I congratulate you for the deployment you have done today. You know I have been critical of you but I must salute you for the deployment you’ve done today. I am happy with you’.”
The National Democratic Congress (NDC) MP says he owes the IGP not only a humble pie but a “whole” cake at the police headquarters for the work done last Tuesday “because the police were on their beat”.
NDC’s Parliamentary Candidate, James Gyakye Quayson, emerged victorious in the by-elections, beating Charles Opoku of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and Bernice Enyonam Sefenu of the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG) to win by 57.56 percent.
At a meeting held with the leadership of the political parties and the Electoral Commission, Ghana (EC) prior to the polls, the IGP asked all bodyguards of officials to be present during the elections to hand over their weapons.
Sam George said he did not initially agree with this directive but later conceded that it was one of the proven decisions made by the IGP.
“They said as an MP my official bodyguard was not allowed to carry his weapon and I didn’t understand why but the IGP insisted on it and said nobody should carry weapons even though we saw some of the NPP private security, individual in plain clothes carrying weapons.
“But at least at the polling station there was enough police presence to deter any of the NPP miscreants who were brought in, so I celebrate them.”
