Minister of Finance Ken Ofori-Atta has urged Ghanaians to support the erection of an ultra-modern head office for the Bank of Ghana.
He emphasises that it is only befitting for the central bank of a country which hosts the African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA) to have such an edifice.
This was contained in a write-up penned by the Finance Minister on Wednesday, September 13.
Published on Thursday, the write-up titled ‘Standing Strong with the Bank of Ghana’ urged Ghanaians to support the efforts of the Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr Ernest Kwamina Yedu Addison.
The decision by the central bank to build a $250-million headquarters in Accra has sparked resistance, particularly from the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), whose lawmakers gave Dr Addison 21 days to resign.
The Minority’s resistance came after the bank announced a ¢60.8 billion loss in its 2022 financial records.
But Mr Ofori-Atta explained that the decision to build the new headquarters had been taken “long” ago.
“With respect to the BoG’s new headquarters, the evidence is clear that decisions to build had already been made long before these ‘losses’ occurred,” the exchequer wrote.
“It is important for us to support such a critical institution to modernize its operations and have a befitting office space for a country that hosts the AfCFTA and has a vision to become the financial services hub of the continent.”
