A Circuit Court in Dormaa-Ahenkro has convicted and fined Nana Taa Kyeremeh, the Nsuasehene of the Dormaa Traditional Area, GHS 600 for wilfully and unlawfully excavating a septic tank that was injurious to life and property.

Nana Kyeremeh pleaded guilty to two counts of unlawful excavation and non-compliance with the Public Health Act 2012, Act 851. The court, presided over by Madam Philomena Ansah Asiedu, Esq., sentenced him accordingly.

Mr. Dickson Kwadwo Akamanda, the prosecutor, who is also the Environmental Health and Sanitation Officer of the Dormaa Central Municipal Assembly in the Bono Region, told the court that the convict, a cocoa farmer, lives in the stadium area, a suburb of Dormaa-Ahenkro.

He stated that on Thursday, May 18, 2023, at about 9:00 a.m., environmental health officers on their usual routine inspection detected that the convict had excavated a septic tank on his premises. The tank was uncovered and surrounded by bushes.

This meant that it served as a receptacle, hiding place for reptiles, breeding flies and mosquitoes, and thus endangered passers-by in the vicinity, especially at night.

Mr. Akamanda stated that the convict had been invited to the office several times for health education on the dangers of leaving the pit uncovered.

He was also given the opportunity to correct the nuisance he had created and report back to the office for re-inspection. However, the convict failed to comply with the directive.

Despite the numerous public education campaigns on the need for the convict and others who commit similar offenses to keep such pits covered, he did not heed the warnings and continued to endanger the health of residents and passers-by.

As a result, the convict was served with a criminal summons to appear before the court to answer to the charges.
