An Accra High Court has set the ruling on a contempt case against the Trades and Industry Minister, Kobina Tahir Hammond.
Lawyers for Assin North MP, James Gyakye Quayson want the court to cite his colleague legislator for contempt after he stated in an interview that Mr Quayson may as well leave Parliament after comparing his case to a former MP, Adamu Sakande.
“There is something we call precedence at the court. This is the same thing that happened with Adamu Sakande. He came to this House…the same NDC (National Democratic Congress) members were the ones who sacked him from parliament and took him to court. He was imprisoned and he eventually died and was buried. It is the same matter.
“They are making all kinds of noise about his swearing-in. I prompted the former deputy Attorney General Dominic Ayine to tell the gentleman that we have seen this before in this House. He should leave this House before he would be jailed,” K. T Hammond noted in an interview with Oyerepa TV.
The Adansi Asokwa MP who was absent in court on Friday, July 28 has been asked by the court presided over by Justice Mary Maame Ekue Yanzuh to justify his comments by August 31.
Lawyers for Gyakye Quayson are also to file their written submissions by the same date.
The court will rule on the matter on October 19, 2023
