The Director of Operations of the Ghana Police Service, George Alex Mensah, has described the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr George Akuffo Dampare, as the worst ever IGP “we’ve ever had”.
The Commissioner of Police (COP), who is currently on leave pending retirement from the Service, says he has not seen such an IGP in his 31 years of active service.
“Hon. member and Hon. Chair, several opportunities and what I said yesterday, if you give me the chance today, I will say so again,” he indicated on Friday, September 1, when he returned to give witness to the special committee looking into a leaked audio recording ostensibly seeking to remove the IGP from office.
“He is not managing the [Ghana] Police Service well,” he stressed.
“And for me, for the 31 years that I have been in the Service, I can tell you he is the worst IGP we’ve ever had.”
The utterance comes after COP Alex Mensah told the committee on Thursday, August 31 that there is no bad blood between him and the current IGP.
He conceded, however, that there are professional disagreements between them occasionally at the top level.
The former Accra Regional Police Commander disclosed to the seven-member bi-partisan committee that the IGP picks and chooses the members of the Police Management Board (POMAB) to attend his meetings.
COP Alex Mensah described himself as one who is open and forward because “I speak my mind”.
The special committee was set up by the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, to investigate the authenticity of the leaked audio recording, which captured COP Alex Mensah with others discussing a plot to oust the IGP.
They claimed the IGP was doing the bidding of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), whose flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, they say, had promised the IGP continuous stay in office.
Former Northern Region Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Daniel Bugri Naabu, whose voice was also found in the conversation, has vouched for the content.
COP Alex Mensah has, however, repudiated the content as doctored.
