Edem Torkonoo, a determined woman has taken it upon herself to inspire young children and instill in them the love of reading through African literature.

As a fervent believer of diversity in children’s literature, she founded a unique book club, “Booksie Box” in November 2018 and has been up and running for five years.

Recognizing the importance of cultural awareness and representation in literature, Edem sets out be establish a space where young readers from the ages of 3-12 may explore the rich tapestry of African storytelling, express their thought and Connect with characters who share similar cultural backgrounds and experiences.

As the book club expands its reach, Edem envisions it fostering positive change.

In an interview with Helen Appiah- Ampofo, host of Womanpreneur on 3fm, she said, “It is very important for children from when they are young to see things that have their images in them, to encounter characters that look like them, Speak like them and have experiences that look like theirs: it is just affirming for them and helps with their identity”.

One of the book club’s initiatives is the Booksie’s Holiday Reading camp, a 7 week long Camp of Creativity that features arts and Crafts projects, reading, writing, Public speaking exercises and engaging debates that nurture young minds, cultivates a love for reading and cultural awareness among children.
