Ghanaian comedian and TV presenter, Kwaku Sintim-Misa was popularly known as KSM has described as a “crime” the naming the Ghana Film Industry, “Gollywood”.
Late last year some Ghanaian movie stakeholders including Richard J. A. Boateng and Greater Accra Regional Director of Film Directors Guild of Ghana (FDGG), Haruna Seidu Soale aka Zoree travelled to Indian to negotiate a partnership deal with Indian filmmakers.
The announcement of the New name, “Gollywood”, was made at the 2nd Edition of the Ghana 60 Years on Film Summit. The event took place at the Accra International Conference Centre on July 12, 2018.
The programme was held under the theme “Rebranding Ghana Film Industry to Rebrand Ghana”. Several personalities such as film actors and actresses, directors and producers were present to grace the occasion.
One of the major agreements from that negotiation was Indian filmmakers coming down to Ghana to shoot movies with the aim of promoting the industry.
But a lot of industry players have rejected the idea by “Mr India” to rebrand the name of Ghana’s Film Industry to “Gollywood” and KSM has also joined the tall list of players against the Gollywood name.
According to KSA, creative people originate and thus finds it difficult to understand why people in the creative industry can’t be creative enough to think outside the box.
“GHOLLYWOOD? This name should be considered a CRIME. How can you be in the CREATIVE arts industry and come up with a name that lucks ORIGINALITY? Creative people ORIGINATE they don’t IMITATE…” he tweeted.
When Andy Dosty asked if he had a better name than Gollywood, KSM said “not much thinking went into that. I am very comfortable with something like GH Cinema. GH has become the brand”, he said.
