Moving Health, a nonprofit that designs, fabricates, and distributes three-wheeled ambulances to provide safe and reliable medical transport in rural Ghana, announces the launch of 3 new ambulances in Kundugu, Jeyiri, and Bulenga communities within the Wa East District.
This expansion was made possible through the generous support of the KGL Foundation, further replicating the impactful work initiated in Sissala East District, Upper West Region of Ghana.
The new tricycle ambulances are tailored to suit the needs of the rural communities, utilizing the most common mode of transportation in the area. Each ambulance is equipped with a
removable stretcher for patients, seats for family members and medical personnel, as well as
basic life support options. Notably, these ambulances are proudly Ghanaian-made, empowering local fabricators and suppliers and fostering economic growth within the country.
The launch event held on Tuesday, July 25 took place at the DHMT Conference Hall in
Funsi and was attended by representatives from various sectors, including the Regional Health Directorate, District Health Directorate, National Ambulance and Fire Service, KGL Foundation, Gye Nyame Mobile Clinic, and other relevant stakeholders.
During the event, Dr. Damien Punguyire, the Regional Health Director, expressed his sincere
appreciation for this much-needed initiative.
He highlighted the numerous cases, especially involving pregnant women, who previously had to rely on motorcycles for transportation during labor, emphasizing that these ambulances would provide critical access to emergency transportation in Wa East District, complementing the efforts of the National Ambulance Service.
Nii Ankonu Annorbah Sarpei, Projects Manager, KGL Foundation, emphasized the significance of the project and its potential impact on the health sector of the district.
He reaffirmed the foundation’s commitment to supporting innovative solutions, expressing hopes that the ambulances would reduce the maternal mortality rate and improve access to healthcare services for the selected communities and their neighboring areas.
Stephanie Nmaju, the Development Lead, shared valuable insights into the decision-making
process behind selecting Kundugu, Jeyiri, and Bulenga as the first recipient communities within
Wa East.
The choices were backed by data collected through rigorous surveys conducted in ten communities, demonstrating the pressing need for these ambulances in the selected areas.
The Country’s Director, Isaac Amoah Quansah, then presented the new ambulance, providing
attendees with valuable insights into its meticulous design process.
The robust and stable tricycle ambulance was specially crafted to navigate the challenging terrains of rural Ghana, boasting a polished interior with a removable stretcher and ample space for up to four passengers.
The Wa East District Health Director, Dr. Pascal Kingsley Mwine, has been a supporter of the
Moving Health ambulances entering his district.
He has been instrumental in ensuring the successful integration of the Moving Health Ambulances into the local healthcare system, with the objective of improving healthcare outcomes in the district.
The stakeholders present at the event expressed their heartfelt gratitude and joy for this
innovative initiative.
They commended Moving Health for its tremendous efforts in revolutionizing emergency transportation in the region and pledged their commitment to sustaining the ambulances, just as their neighboring district, Sissala East.
