Prosecuting copyright thieves will benefit musicians – Bessa Simons

The Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA) has released a press statement expressing its concerns over the formation of a potential breakaway group, referred to as the “New MUSIGA,” by some of its members.

The statement, signed by Acting President Bessa Simons, describes the move as a ploy to cause confusion among the union’s members and urges all musicians to condemn such actions.

In the press release, Bessa Simons highlights MUSIGA’s constitution, specifically Article 7.4.1, which states that membership is open to professional musicians who are not affiliated with any rival body of musicians.

“After the failure of their legal machinations and maneuvering, this latest attempt to break the ranks of MUSIGA is unwarranted and must be condemned by all well-meaning musicians. According to MUSIGA’ s Constitution, Article 7.4.1. Membership shall be open to; Professional musicians who are not members of any rival body of musicians,” a portion of the statement read.

Quoting Article 7.7 of the union’s constitution, which addresses conflicts of interest, Bessa Simons emphasized that members are prohibited from holding membership in any union of musicians that undermines the legitimate interests of MUSIGA or any of its affiliates.

The acting president cautioned that any member who joins the purported “New MUSIGA” will automatically lose their membership in the Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA).

The press release comes ahead of MUSIGA’s upcoming elections, scheduled to take place on August 8, 2023.
