Popular Nollywood actor, John Okafor, better known as Mr Ibu has detailed how he was assaulted by thugs during a campaign event in the lead-up to Nigeria’s 2023 general elections.

Mr Ibu, 61, recounted his experience campaigning for a preferred candidate in a recent interview on Vanguard TV.

The legendary actor shared his experience, stating, “Nigerian politics [laughs]. Partially, I was involved. The only thing different is that there were some situations where there was thuggery.”

He went on to describe how he received several slaps from unknown assailants while campaigning for his candidate, saying, “Where we went to campaign, I received slaps from people that I don’t even know. But there was so much to slap because it didn’t mean anything to me. I collected like three or four slaps, free, from other boys. ‘Why did you come here?’ [They asked] Before I answer that question, gbosa! You won’t even like the sound of the slap because the people that are slapping are idiots because their slap is not human.”

Despite this experience, Mr. Ibu remains undaunted and is currently working on a comeback movie, which he had put on hold during the election and transition period.

Mr. Ibu is a household name in the entertainment industry in Africa, having appeared in numerous Nollywood films, including the popular 2004 comedy “Mr. Ibu,” which earned him the nickname.

His experience highlights the often-tumultuous nature of Nigerian politics and the challenges faced by those who dare to participate.
