A former Western Region Director of the Ghana Education Service (GES), Afiba Dadzie, has encouraged parents to educate themselves about the nuances associated with social media.

With such knowledge, she said, they will then be able to determine whether their wards are using social media for productive ends or abusing them.

“The world is changing rapidly and social media is becoming an indispensable learning resource,” she noted.

“Our kids are using them everyday. So as a parent you must also learn how to Facebook, how to tweet and all that,” she charged the parents.

Speaking at the annual Achievements Day organised by Sanctuary Montessori in Takoradi on the theme, ‘Celebrating Excellence, Influence and Impact’, Mrs Afiba Dadzie said “that is the only way you can keep pace with your kid’s use of social media”.

The Achievements Day is organised in recognition of excellence despite a stressful academic term for the pupils.

On the Day, kids at Sanctuary Montessori exhibit talents in co-curricular activities such as drumming and dancing, swimming, ballet dancing, spoken word, among others.

The Head of The Sanctuary Montessori, Dora Afua Yawson, explained they take special interest in the development of craftsmanship.

“We do a lot of emotional and intellectual development. For some of the kids, it is not about books. Some are very good at creating things and so we try to do a holistic assessment and see what are the other strengths beyond just the reading.

“When such wide opportunities are presented to the kids, they naturally gravitate towards their preferences and will guide them to realise this unique potential.”
