Aswad Adam Mahama is one of the three candidates to contest the May 13 primaries

The Functional Executive Committee (FEC) of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has cleared Adam Aswad Mahama to contest in the Salaga South Constituency primaries slated for Saturday, May 13.

The Savannah Region Vetting Committee chaired by Moses Mabingba initially put the candidature of Aswad Adam Mahama on hold over doubts about his membership.

The matter was subsequently referred to the Functional Executive Committee of the party for redress.

FEC has since cleared Mr. Aswad Mahama to contest the Salaga South constituency primaries.

This brings the number of aspirants to three – incumbent Hajia Zuweira Ibrahima, Alhaji Saaka Danjumah and Adam Aswad Mahama.

Speaking in a telephone interview with 3news.com, Mr Aswad described the earlier decision by the vetting committee as a tactics to deprive him of leading the party in the constituency in 2024.

“They know I’m the right candidate but they wanted to take me out of the competition for only God knows why but the Allah I serve is wide awake to grant the request of delegates in my beloved constituency.

“Yes, they have succeeded in distracting my plans with my team but I am determined to win the primaries and go ahead to win the parliamentary elections for the party in 2024.”

He lamented some decisions of some officials of the party can harm the party in future.

He applauded FEC for their decision to clear him to contest the upcoming election.

“FEC has been fair to me and I want to say Thank You to them for justly settling this matter.”

The Salaga South Constituency is one of the constituencies that has been won by both the NDC and NPP though the NDC has won more.

The seat was held by the NDC from 1992 to 2000.

In 2000, Boniface Abubakari Sadiqque won the seat from the NDC as an independent candidate, making him the first and only independent candidate to have won the seat.

In 2004, Boniface who was then appointed a Deputy Minister of Tourism and Modernization of the Capital City by then President John Agyekum Kufuor, crossed carpets to join the NPP.

He subsequently won the seat for the NPP.

In 2008, the NDC reclaimed the seat with Abubakari Ibrahim Dey.

In 2016, the NPP reclaimed the seat from the NDC with the former Savannah Regional Minister, Adam Salifu Braimah.

However, in 2020, Hajia Zuweira Ibrahima won the NDC primaries and subsequently won the parliamentary election making her the first female MP in the constituency and the Savannah Region.
