A vulnerable petty trader, Madam Sefakor Afedetey was on Wednesday, September 2023 gifted a cash amount of GHC 5000 by Verna Purified Water following her struggles to make ends meet.
The 57-year-old petty trader shared her life story with the 3FM team during the Verna Changing Lives Campaign dubbed Accra Turning Point at Okaishie Drug Lane propelling the Verna to come to her rescue.
According to Sefakor, the COVID-19 pandemic had a significant negative impact on her company, costing to lose her capital and force her to find other means of surving.
She has since then been hawking anything from foodstuff to polythene bags in the central business area of Accra to fend for herself and five children. However, she takes the items on credit and pays them back after selling them.
Madam Sefakor is the sixth person to receive the Five Thousand Cedis (GHS 5000) cash gift from the Verna Changing Lives Campaign since its commencement in Accra. Previous winners are Isaac Berkai a second-year blind student of the University of Education Winneba, 32 years old Gladys Blessing a physically challenged street hawker, Lydia Korkoi Armah 61 years old petty trader who needed money for her medical bills, a 44-year-old female coconut seller, Lorraine Obeng a mother of two who is doing a male-dominated job to cater for her children’s education, and Madam Grace Adoley Pappoe, 64 years old onions and garlic seller at Makola 31st Market.
The cash brings to Sefakor a sigh of relief as she plans to settle her debts and expand her business to make herself and her family comfortable.
This CSR project aims to better the lives of those burdened by adversity through the regular provision of prompt responses to the urgent problems faced by people on the streets of Accra.
Verna Changing Lives is powered by 3FM 92.7 MHz Your Urban Lifestyle radio.
