The VGMA 2023 red carpet was filled with glamorous and daring looks from some of Ghana’s biggest music stars. While some of the looks were a hit, others missed the mark.
As a music event, guests can play with concepts and themes that align with their own styles.
Red carpets have become a global platform for creating fashion moments that resonate beyond borders and the VGMA red carpet is no exception.
They have cultivated numerous style icons, sparked innovative fashion trends, and transformed what was once just an awards prelude into, arguably, the highlight of the event.
Nonetheless, there are several areas in which the organization of the red carpet could be improved.
Attendees have expressed their dissatisfaction with the inadequate crowd control measures, the usage of a single pathway as both an entrance and exit point, poor air circulation, and cramped space for other media organizations to operate from.
Perhaps it’s time for Charterhouse as an organization to look into how the Recording Academy manages its red carpet system and incorporate similar strategies into its own events.
By studying and adapting successful red carpet systems from other organizations, Charterhouse could enhance the experience for both attendees and media alike.
Here’s a breakdown of the best and worst looks from the night.
Anita
Anita gave Kente fashion a new meaning as she stole the show with her corseted Kente dress with a low bun fastened at the nape of her neck. She was styled by Adwoa Yeboah Clothing
Berla
Berla won on Saturday and no one can tell us otherwise. All 3 looks communicated with the audience. From her Cleopatra look with a hoodie designed by Yartel to her moulded body suit, there was enough to gawk over. Our jaws are still on the ground from shock.
James Gardiner
Despite James Gardiner’s terrible hosting skills, he gave the red carpet something to love in his black kimono look over a white shirt. It might be different but it worked quite well
Naa Ashorkor
Naa Ashorkor sought the help of Ghanaian couturier, Pistis Ghana to design a 3D butterfly gown with a side train for her co-hosting gig. It evoked the spirit of the event; classy, stylish and fun.
Ms Flava
TV host, Ms Flava was easily one of our best dressed; looking stunning in a black gown that hugged her curves in all the right places.
The simple yet elegant look was topped off with a bead ball tip fringe adorning the shoulders and delicate floral appliqué embellishing the neckline.
The subtle red lip and minimal accessories made her a standout on the red carpet.
Camidoh
The Afrobeats star looked dapper in a floral print tuxedo jacket and black pants.
The look was simple yet classic, and the addition of a black bowtie and patent leather dress shoes completed the ensemble.
Whoever styled Camidoh knew exactly how to endear him to a new set of female fans and it’s exciting to see him become a ‘sex symbol’
Adwoa Noella
Adwoa Noella caught our eyes and we’ve taken full notice of this damsel moving forward. A beaded kente gown with feathered epaulettes.
It gave couture without her trying so hard.
Sarkodie
Sarkodie redefined mensfashion with his minimalist take on suits. His Casablanca blazer matched with sneakers and jewellery was definitely red carpet-worthy
Black Sherrif
We want the pants…like today. We love how this chap revives 70’s fashion in a subtle way. The jacket had a few tailoring issues but it still was still sartorial
DJ Breezy
DJ Breezy can have our money, our votes for best dressed and everything in between. This is a bold look especially since it strays away from the regular pants and suit look. It’s a 10/10.
Not So Best Dressed
This list entails the ones who really did not wow us but also had looks that were okay to see. And though they tried to break the internet with their red carpet looks, they just managed to break our souls with clothes that did not meet the criteria but still got us talking
Piesie Esther
Too much going on with this dress when simple could have been more. Dear Piesie tell your stylist to take note.
Nana Romeo
Still laughing hard at this look because it really is giving sofa vibes or something. It’s best we forget this look as quickly as we can
Abiana
Abiana tried but she failed woefully to translate the concept in her mind to the red carpet. For someone who has given us looks, this night will not be added to her best fits.
Adomaa & Godwin Namboh
Dear Joy, this dress isn’t giving us joy. It’s serving chaos because it was poorly fitted, your boobs do not fit into the breast cup and we can see the horrible job your tailor was trying to hard with all that surface ornamentation. No hard feelings but this look is highly problematic.
Godwin?? Really?? Why?? You know what let’s just pretend you were not there to begin with. No hard feelings
Kwabena Kwabena
While attempting a Harry Styles-inspired look, some have criticized his slim-fitted flare pants as being indicative of LGBTQ fashion.
However, it should be noted that slim-fitted flare pants have long been a staple for men’s fashion, and women have only recently begun to wear pants more regularly.
It is unfair to attribute this style choice to any specific group or lifestyle. While Kwabena Kwabena’s fabric choice may be subject to personal taste, it is important to refrain from making harmful assumptions and generalizations. The issue with his look was the fabric choice aside that this is a look to check out.
Fiifi Coleman & Chrystal
The concept for Chrystal’s dress would have worked well if it was tailored well. Dear Ghanaian designers, we can see a poorly done outfit when we see one and this is a clear example.
Fiifi loves a lot of Black suits but his stylist rarely gets it right with putting his ensemble together. It’s understandable that he has a huge frame but that does not stop his team from creating a look that fits well and gives off a clean finish
Worst Dressed
Chiief One
Sigh!!!! Chief One just gave denim a really bad rap. If it was done well, a whole fashion movement would have been born.
Felicia Osei
It’s very evident Felicia did not want to be at this event and it shows in her outfit.
The trolls will come for her engagement outfit and we’ll not want to add salt to injury but the bag is giving me an aneurysm.
Nana Ama Mcbrown
Nana Ama Mcbrown is loved so much but I’ve seen the original version of this look and I am sure Toke Makinwa will laugh at Ghanaians when she sees this poor execution of her Tolu Bally outfit.
It is my worst-dressed outfit and nothing will change my thoughts about it.
Elikem
Throw Elikem and everything he is wearing from the ‘Colour Purple’ musical away because what is this??
It’s important that if you are going to criticise others for their looks as he did to Sarkodie, you should be ready to shut everyone else up with your style choices.
A J Sarpong
Instead of criticising AJ for her style choices, we would rather let her know what went wrong and how she can change it.
The corset is too long which defeats the idea of a corsetry which is to create some sort of an illusion in your mid area.
The goal is to make the waist look very petite and show the broad hips. It’s not happening here. The side train did not save this look neither did the high slit.
Lastly, the exaggerated sleeves could have been something different but that was a great panel cut-out anyway.
