The integration of smartphones in cars seemed like a trendy concept at first, but when the time came for me to upgrade my car, I realised how essential it is. As a tech enthusiast, I made it a priority to find a car that offered both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Little did I know that this feature would become such an important part of my daily life.
Nowadays, I can’t imagine driving without the convenience and seamless connectivity provided by Apple CarPlay. It has truly revolutionised the way we interact with our vehicles and made our driving experiences much more enjoyable. Recently, I had the opportunity to review the Peugeot 3008, one of the cars that are assembled in Ghana. I demonstrated on my social media platforms the benefits of Apple CarPlay, the level of interaction the posts received gave me an indication that these are here to stay.
With smartphone integration platforms, drivers can now seamlessly merge the power of their smartphones with the convenience of their cars. These have become so prevalent that navigation businesses and other similar in-car service based businesses have become obsolete. In the following text, I discuss a few points of note concerning these platforms.
Android Auto caters exclusively to Android phones, while Apple CarPlay is designed for iPhones. This ensures that your chosen platform effortlessly synchronises with your preferred mobile device.
Android Auto necessitates Android 8.0 or newer, whereas CarPlay mandates an iPhone 5 or newer running iOS 7.1 or above. This ensures that a wide range of devices are compatible with these integration platforms.
While both platforms offer similar functionality, there are distinct features and interfaces that cater to the preferences and habits of Android and iOS users.
When it comes to technology compatibility is key; CarPlay is available in select models that may not support Android Auto, but the majority of new cars equipped with one integration platform also include the other. This flexibility allows consumers to choose based on their device preference.
When it comes to Navigation Prowess, Android Auto employs the robust Google Maps for default navigation, while CarPlay relies on Apple Maps. This allows users to leverage their preferred mapping service seamlessly. Several third-party navigation platforms can also be utilised. I personally use Waze Maps most of the time. For those who prioritise navigation, Google Maps is a must, especially in Ghana. It provides an edge with its superior updated local maps and navigation capabilities, ensuring you reach your destination efficiently.
Often when Android and iOS are mentioned the conversation quickly pits customisation against organization: Android Auto boasts a customisable app layout and the ability to display multiple apps simultaneously, including a split-screen view. CarPlay, on the other hand, offers an organised interface with a fixed layout displaying navigation, music, and Siri suggestions.
These platforms also allow you to use Voice Assistants: Android Auto integrates with Google Assistant, providing a seamless voice-controlled experience. In contrast, CarPlay leverages Siri, catering to Apple’s ecosystem of services. This feature also enhances safety, in that you can run certain functions just by talking to the system, without having to take your eyes off the road.
Another important inherited feature of these platforms is third-party app compatibility: Android Auto leads the pack with a broader range of third-party app compatibility compared to CarPlay, but CarPlay also boasts of very high quality apps, ensuring you have access to most of the functionalities of your phone that matter most to you.
The transition from tethered USB connections to wireless integration for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto has rapidly become commonplace. Dozens of models now offer this wireless convenience, providing a clutter-free and streamlined experience; but it must be noted that certain phones get hot when charging via Qi wireless charging so consideration should be made.
When it’s time to sell off or trade up a car, these features will deliver to you easy, quick sale at great price. The new owners of the car will also have modern amenities in that pre-loved car.
With the success of these platforms the proponents seek to integrate these platforms deeper into your cars; with apple talking about completing taking over your dashboard in the nearest future.
In the dynamic landscape of automotive technology, smartphone integration has emerged as an indispensable feature for modern drivers. Whether you’re an Android enthusiast or an iOS aficionado, these integration platforms seamlessly bridge the gap between your smartphone and your car. Stay connected, informed, and entertained while keeping your focus where it matters most – on the road ahead.
Embrace the future of automotive technology with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay this 2023.
Happy Motoring…
