Ghanaian businesswoman and socialite, Diamond Appiah has found herself back in police custody moments after the Circuit Court in Accra had discharged her in a case involving an alleged fraudulent land transaction.

The Office of the Attorney, in a process signed by Chief State Attorney Mrs. Evelyn Keelson, had dropped the charge against Appiah. However, immediately after leaving the courtroom, she was apprehended by the police.

According to a report by StarrFM’s court reporter, Murtala Innusah, Diamond Appiah on January 17, 2023, had been arrested and charged in connection with an alleged fraudulent land transaction amounting to $30,000.

She was accused of selling a portion of land in East Legon Hills to Ayisha Modi for the aforementioned sum. Appiah had pleaded not guilty to the charges and was granted bail of GHc300,000.

The former actress and musician’s defense counsel contended that the prosecution had no case against their client and stressed that the law should be wielded in the pursuit of justice, not the contrary.

After considering the arguments, the presiding Judge, His Honour Mr. Isaac Addo, acknowledged the process signed by the Chief State Attorney. He stated that when such a process is filed, the accused person is entitled to be discharged.

Despite her discharge, Diamond Appiah was unexpectedly rearrested after leaving the courtroom. The complainant in the matter, Ayisha Modi, was also present during the proceedings.

Background to the Case

According to DSP Evans Kesse, the complainant, Ayisha Modi, is a businesswoman residing in Adjiringanor, Accra, while the accused, Diamond Appiah, is also a businesswoman residing in East Legon.

In 2020, the complainant needed a plot of land for building purposes and was discussing this with a witness in the case named Johnson. The accused overheard the conversation and interjected, claiming to possess a plot of land in East Legon Hills that she could sell to the complainant at a reduced price.

Allegedly, the accused collected $30,000 in cash from the complainant under the pretense of selling her a parcel of land in East Legon Hills. When the complainant visited the land, she encountered Gustav, who asserted ownership of the land. The complainant’s efforts to retrieve her money were unsuccessful, leading to the report to the police and subsequent arrest of the accused.

Investigation reportedly revealed that the accused did not own the land at the specified location. In her caution statement, the accused allegedly admitted to the offense. After the investigation, she was charged and brought before the court.

The circumstances surrounding Diamond Appiah’s rearrest immediately after her discharge remain unclear.
