Former Minister of Food and Agriculture Dr Owusu Afriyie Akoto has become one of the flagbearer aspirants with his dream still on to be elected the 2024 Presidential Candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

With 10 aspirants filing to contest the 2024 flagbearer position, the NPP scheduled to whittle the number to five for a final showdown on Saturday, November 4.

In what it called the National College of Special Elections, about 961 members, referred to as super delegates, cast their votes on Saturday, August 26.

Front runners Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia and former Trade Minister Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen with Assin Central Member of Parliament (MP) Ken Ohene Agyapong were tipped to make the cut.

After polls on Saturday, former Kwadaso MP Dr Afriyie Akoto also made the cut.

He polled 36 out of the 923 total valid votes cast across the 17 polling centers.

The Vice President, true to bookmakers’ predictions, came first with 629 votes while Ken Agyapong came a distant second with 132 votes.

Mr Kyerematen came third with 95 votes, followed by his former colleague minister Dr Afriyie Akoto.

The final slot will see former Energy Minister Boakye Kyeremanteng Agyarko slugging it out with former Mampong MP Francis Addai-Nimoh.

Both aspirants polled nine votes apiece to tie at No. 5.

The Chair of the NPP Elections Committee, Rev Prof Aaron Mike Oquaye, announced – after the Electoral Commission, Ghana (EC) officially declared the results – that a run-off will be held as early as next weekend to separate the two aspirants.

In the case of another tie, he indicated, another round of elections will be held, till the two are separated.

“So, a week today, if no one has stepped aside for the other, then we look forward to another election for a fifth person,” the former Speaker of Parliament said.

“At the end of the day, we are going to present five contestants for the grand finale.”

Those who could not make the cut are Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, Kwadwo Nsafoah Poku, Joe Ghartey and Dr Kofi Konadu Apraku.

Either Mr Agyarko or Mr Addai-Nimoh will join this set after Saturday, September 2 .
