Former Minister of Regional Cooperation and NEPAD Dr Kofi Konadu Apraku failed to amass any votes in the just-ended Super Delegates Conference of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

It is surprising that the man who came third – behind eventual winner John Agyekum Kufuor, who went on to be President, and current President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, in the 1998 presidential primaries of the ruling party – has dropped down the pecking order.

He was seeking to be one of the five flagbearer aspirants to make the cut for the November 4 Presidential Primaries.

At the end of the nationwide voting by about 961 delegates on Saturday, August 26, he did not get any votes.

Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia polled more than 60 percent of the valid votes to come tops.

All other aspirants got at least one vote except the former Offinso North Member of Parliament (MP), Dr Apraku.

Among those who failed to make it to the next round are Kwadwo Nsafoah Poku, Joe Ghartey, Kwabena Agyei Agyepong and one of Boakye Kyeremanteng Agyarko and Francis Addai-Nimoh.

The two polled nine votes to tie at Number 5 and, per the party’s regulations, will go into a run-off on Saturday, September 2.

For now, it is clear Dr Bawumia, Ken Ohene Agyapong, Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen and Dr Afriyie Akoto are those with the tickets for the final round of selection in November.

Whoever wins that vote will come face-to-face with former President John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the 2024 elections.
