The National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) has attributed the non-functionality of traffic lights in most parts of the country to the theft of some important components.

Some major streets in Accra are now deathtraps for motorists and pedestrians, as malfunctioning traffic lights have turned many intersections into chaotic scenes during peak hours.

In an interview with Citi News, the Head of Public Affairs Department at the NRSA, Pearl Satekla, mentioned that underground electrical cables and other components, such as the bulbs, are being stolen.

“One of the reasons is that thieves steal bolts, wires, and other components from traffic lights whenever they are maintained or erected. We don’t know how to stop this recurring theft. Second, there is a lack of funds to pay contractors who work on the lights, and then there is the procedure for purchasing or importing replacement parts,” she said.

The Authority also assured that steps are being taken to repair all traffic lights nationwide.

“This is a very worrying situation, and we have discussed it, written to the Department of Urban Roads, and engaged them in various ways. I can assure you that they have also assured us that they have been able to secure some funds from the Ministry of Roads and Highways and that they will be repairing the malfunctioning and non-functioning traffic lights in the shortest possible time,” Ms. Satekla stated.
