Black Stars forward Antoine Semenyo has recounted how he bounced back from a terrible injury to score a crucial goal against Liverpool last weekend.
In their second game of the 2023/24 Premier League season, the former Bristol City striker opened the scoring for Bournemouth in the third minute paving the way for an exciting clash which saw his team eventually lose 3-1 to Liverpool at Anfield.
Prior to the goal, Semenyo was a second-half substitute in the Cherries’ previous game against West Ham, and his name on the starting lineup for a more difficult clash against the Reds appeared as a surprise.
However, he made the most of the opportunity to stand out for his team despite the unwanted result.
When asked if he knew he was starting at Anfield, he replied to Daily Echo, “I found out on Saturday morning.
“But you’ve always got to be ready if you’re on the bench or starting. So I was happy to get the start, and happy to get the goal. But the result is what we wanted.”
He also narrated the struggles he has encountered in the Premier League having battled with injuries and inadequate playing time since joining in January from the Championship while expressing his zeal to get more goals for Bournemouth.
“It’s been tough the last couple of months with the shin injury. But I just had to be strong mentally and physically and get myself ready to the beast I am! I’ve done well enough to get a start, so I just need to keep going and keep building myself.”
“It’s almost like a dream come true,” Semenyo said. “But I’ve been working for this and I just need to keep working. Hopefully, I can get many more goals in other stadiums. I’m happy with myself and happy with how I felt I’ve got on so far,” he concluded.
Semenyo is expected to return to the Black Stars as they lock horns with the Central African Republic in their final fixture of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON)
