Some 46 members of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Western Region will on Saturday, August 26 participate in the party’s Special Delegates Conference.

They are composed of 17 Constituency Chairmen, 17 Regional Executives, one founder and nine Members of Parliament.

The event will come off at the Great Hall of the Takoradi Technical University.

The party says it has put in place foolproof measures to prevent any hiccups during and after the exercise.

“This is an internal exercise and as a region, we want to come out of it unscathed. I am envisaging an exercise where the party will still stand united afterwards. The great battle is with the opposition party and not among us,” a former regional organiser,Abdul Ganiyu said.

Even before Saturday’s exercise some of the delegates, especially MPs, have made their choice of candidate open.

For these people, they are motivated by the fact that the quest and desire to ensure that the best candidate is selected to help break the 8 should be above any talk of “who came first but purely on competence and unique attributes”.

Member of Parliament for Effia Joseph Cudjoe commented: “From my experience working with some of the aspirants at various levels, I have no doubt in my mind that there is a strong representation of the best the party can offer. In fact the NPP is spoilt for choice with this current group of presidential aspirants. However, on the scale of good, better and best Dr. Bawumia stands tall to deliver power for this great party in the 2024 elections. His qualities especially his economic wizardry are incontestable. We must therefore as a matter of necessity get it right as NPP. We simply cannot fail to see that the Moses of our time is Dr. Bawumia.”

When asked for his prediction for the first five after the conference, Member of Parliament for Sekondi Andrew Egyapa Mercer said, “Number 1 Dr. Bawumia, the rest well we shall see. The beating will be woto woto woto. In fact, I was among the first few people who declared their support for DMB even before he himself came out. The results are already written in the stars. It’s so glaring. Saturday is a mere formality”.

But for some of the delegates, they want to keep their choice close to their chest as they think the open endorsement could hurt the party.

Charles Mintaba, a social commentator, in an interview, agrees that the open endorsement is problematic.

He makes references to other similar exercises where aspirants who appeared to be in a commanding lead have gone ahead to lose and wants delegates to conduct themselves in a manner that will not make it difficult for them to work with someone who may win apart from their preferred choice.
